Near-adiabatic quench experiments on short YBa2Cu3O7− coated conductors

چکیده
Minimum quench energy and normal zone propagation velocity are measured on short YBa2Cu3O7− coated conductors in self-field at temperatures ranging from 40 to 77 K. The sample is cooled via a cryocooler with a cryostat pressure of 10−4 Pa, creating a nearly adiabatic environment. A normal zone is created by pulsing a heater that is attached to the sample surface with a thin layer of alumina-filled epoxy. The minimum quench energy is determined by identifying the minimum heater energy that creates a propagating normal zone, and the propagation velocity is determined from the time delay between voltage signals in voltage taps distributed along the length of the conductor. It is found that the minimum quench energy is on the order of 1 J and the normal zone propagation velocity ranges from 1–40 mm/s. These results are compared to similar measurements on other coated conductor architectures and geometries and to the classical adiabatic quench propagation model. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. THE NORMAL ZONE IN YBa2Cu3O6+x-COATED CONDUCTORS (POSTPRINT)
We consider the distribution of an electric field in YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO)-coated conductors for a situation in which the DC transport current is forced into the copper stabilizer due to a weak link—a section of the superconducting film with a critical current less than the transport current. The electric field in the metal substrate is also discussed. The results are compared with recent experime...
متن کاملTheoretical explanation of the non-equipotential quench behaviour in Y–Ba–Cu–O coated conductors
YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) coated conductors are realized by the deposition of a YBCO film atop thin (10−6 m) ceramic buffer layers, previously deposited upon a high resistance nickel alloy. On the other side of the tape a copper layer is often added to create an alternative current path during quenches. Several investigations have shown a different qualitative behaviour of the voltages measured on the...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF STRAIN ON GRAINS AND GRAIN BOUNDARIES IN YBa2Cu3O7−δ COATED CONDUCTORS (POSTPRINT)
The role of grains and grain boundaries in producing reversible strain effects on the transport current critical current density (Jc) of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) coated conductors that are produced with metal–organic deposition (MOD) was investigated. The strain (ε) dependence of Jc for full-width coated conductors is compared with that for samples in which the current transport was limited to a few ...
متن کاملQuench propagation velocity for highly stabilized conductors
Quench propagation velocity in conductors having a large amount of stabilizer outside the multif i lamentary area is considered. The current redistribution process between the multif i lamentary area and the stabilizer can strongly affect the quench propagation. A criterion is derived determining the conditions under which the current redistribution process becomes significant, and a model of e...
متن کاملSuperior properties of SmBCO coated conductors at high magnetic fields and elevated temperatures
In addition to the well investigated YBa2Cu3O7 d (Y-123, YBCO) compound, many other rare earth-123 compounds are candidate materials for the production of coated conductors. Sm-123 seems to be an excellent alternative because of its higher transition temperature (Tc) and higher critical current densities (Jc) in external magnetic fields. Because of the fast decrease of Jc in YBCO at elevated te...
